There
is currently a large-scale regeneration project which has brought about
an influx of construction and gentrification to Tottenham. This project
is a study on the diversity of residents within the area in tandem with
its now changing socioeconomic environment.
According
to the Haringey State of the Borough report from December 2024, house
prices have risen by 77% over the past decade, while residents' earnings
in the same period have increased by just 19%(source).
This stark disparity, compounded by the ongoing cost of living crisis,
has made it increasingly difficult for residents to remain in their
communities. The newly built luxury apartments in the area reflect this
change, their hoardings advertising an image of exclusivity. Tottenham
is home to a 24.0% Black population, nearly six times the national
average, while its white population stands at 47.7%, 58% below the
national average(source).
The area is also home to thriving South American and Turkish
communities. In contrast the CGI rendered visions of Tottenham on
hoardings surrounding construction sites almost exclusively depict white
people. Representing the dichotomy of the ideal tenants of the private
housing developments versus the diverse demography of the area.
Taken between 2018-2024 central to the projects subjectivity is the daily lives and everyday experiences of people within the area.
